Let's talk Pigment vs. Dyed Ink and why you should care.
I'll start by saying we could dive deep deep into this topic as printers/artists/photographers/crafters....but for the sake of the general public, I'm going to cut to the point and make this as simple as possible!
Dyed ink is water soluble. Dye dissolves in water and will absorb into your surface.
Pigment Ink does not dissolve in water. Pigment is a solid and will cling to the surface of your paper/canvas/etc.
Dye is arguably more impressive straight out of a printer with more vibrant color at first inspection when comparing a dyed inkjet to pigment inkjet printer (that gap being made steadily smaller through modern technology)...but it doesn't take much sun exposure to begin fading. Fading so drastic, you will easily notice within 20 years....maybe sooner depending on where and how the image is displayed.
We feel there is a noticeable density to pigment that just isn't there with dye due to its solid vs liquid nature.
Because dye is water soluble, a single drop of water could destroy an entire print.
Placing a glass of cold water on a hot day on top of a pigment based print, will likely recover with minimal damage to the image (depending on surface chosen for print). This is important when considering humidity and its effects on a print long term.
Dye based ink is incredibly susceptible to Sunlight. Pigment Based ink is far more resilient to Sunlight.
Dye based ink sustains quality for about 10-25 years. Pigment Based Ink won't budge for 100-250 years if printed on an Archival Surface. Variance depends on surface and environment. (Display in sunlight directly in front of a window vs. in a family archive that rarely sees sunlight.)
That's the gist of it!
Here are a couple simple videos that will help illustrate the topic:
Note: Love in Ink currently uses Dye Based Ink in the beginning launch of the company. We will transition to Pigment Based Ink in 3-6 months as our company gets started! This allows us ample time and resources to be sure we obtain the highest quality and educated purchases that align with our top three missions!
